An Interferometric Examination of Polished Diamond Surfaces

Abstract

Multiple-beam interference techniques have been applied to the examination of polished diamond surfaces. Two stones were polished using normal and experimental techniques, but neither stone could be polished to the same standard as a high grade glass optical flat. On one stone it was possible to obtain an area of 5 sq mm which was flat to within λ/40. The surfaces of both stones, at all stages, showed polish marks, and these were not eliminated even with prolonged polishing.
