On the Resolving Power of the Human Eye

Abstract

Data for one observer are presented for the minimal angle of resolution of two point light sources observed against a background the illumination of which could be varied. Thus, the minimal angle of resolution could be measured for different contrasts between point sources and background. The results show that the minimal angle of resolution, within the range of luminances used, depends primarily on the contrast, irrespective of the level of adapting luminances. A minimal and constant value of the minimal angle of resolution occurs when the contrast is reduced below a fairly critical value.
