On the Extension of a System for Differential Correction of Lens Systems to Include Second-Order Terms

Abstract

The possibility is investigated of extending the design procedure developed by Cruickshank for differential correction of lens systems to include the effects of second derivatives. The most convenient variables for use in the first-order work prove unsuitable for the extension to second-order. Choosing new variables, a general method for using second-order coefficients is developed. This threatens to be laborious in practice, but a simplified procedure suitable for the case of bending is described having advantages over other methods commonly used at present.
