Design and scalability analysis of a fast-frequency-hopping optical CDMA switch architecture

Abstract

We present what we believe to be a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) access switch architecture. The architecture design of the switch is based on an optical code-division multiple access (OCDMA) with a fast-frequency-hopping (FFH) technique. Encoding and decoding devices are designed based on the tunable fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Simulations of the spectral response of these devices are presented, showing the simultaneous use of the time and frequency domains to achieve OCDMA. Scalability analysis of the switch fabric based on the analytical performance of the code and numerical simulations of the optical components used to implement the system is presented. The multicasting and broadcasting functionality is easily implemented by including an optical selector and assigning a specific code for multicasting and broadcasting. This reduces the hardware complexity for these additional network functions. Analytical performance evaluations and simulations in terms of bit error rate (BER) are presented. We show that the FFH-OCDMA technique can support a 19 x 19 switch fabric with BER < 10-11.
