Analytic investigations of cost benefits of complementing a client network with an optical express layer

Abstract

Analytic expressions of the break-even cost ratios and total cost ratios for an optical express network versus a client-only network are presented. Including protection or restoration, only knowledge of the path hop-lengths is required independent of network topology and routing strategies. The results show the relative optical port and common equipment (CE) prices necessary for a total network equipment cost reduction or, with given port and CE prices, the percentage of the cost reduction.
