Abstract

There are many ways to design and implement survivable optical networks (SONs) for the future. This, coupled with the many uncertainties on how optical networks may evolve, provides ample research opportunities for researchers to address a wide variety of issues—as is reflected in this special SON focus, in which four invited papers addressing four different problems related to SONs appear.
