Abstract

Passive optical networks (PONs) are being applied to a wider set of applications, including those that are outage sensitive. Protection or resilience techniques address this need. This paper reviews these techniques as they are applied to the three major architectures of PON systems: TDM-, WDM-, and TWDM-PON. Practical considerations of facilities and equipment arrangement are also covered, including the support of dual-parenting protection.
