Abstract

A compact and broadband nine-channel mode-division (de)multiplexer is proposed and demonstrated. The asymmetrical directional coupler based multimode (de)multiplexers and the densely packed multimode waveguide arrays are combined to enhance the mode capacity. The proposed (de)multiplexer shows theoretical crosstalk that is <−15 dB over an 100-nm wavelength band for all the nine channels. The experimental results show a low crosstalk that is <−15 dB over a 55-nm wavelength range for all the supported modes.
