Abstract

An evolution scenario of broadband access is proposed, using a wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) and a hybrid WDM/time-division-multiplexed PON (WDM/TDM-PON). As candidate technologies to be applied in the evolution, the laser-injected reflective semiconductor optical amplifier–based WDM-PON and hybrid WDM/TDM-PON with a remotely pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifier are introduced. The remote-pumping scheme increases the optical link loss budget of the hybrid WDM/TDM-PON to 24 dB, while the passive nature of the network is maintained.
