Abstract

A programmable polarization-mode-dispersion source must be stable, repeatable, and predictable. Birefringent phase and the oscillatory nature of scalar polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) spectra are attributes analyzed in this paper. The general theory of coherent PMD is presented, as well as details of the requisite material technologies.
