Abstract

An analytical theory of the dynamical behavior of erbium-doped amplifier (EDFA) chains is developed. A simple and detailed physical picture is presented, explaining the speeding up and the appearance of overshoots in the transient response. The speed of the transients is shown to be proportional to the number of the amplifiers in the chain.
