Feature Issue of Applied Optics

International Optical Design Conference (IODC) 2021

Submissions Open: 15 July 2021

Submission Deadline: 30 August 2021

Applied Optics welcomes submissions to a feature issue on "International Optical Design Conference (IODC)" in conjunction with the Optical Design and Fabrication Congress, which took place in a virtual format on 27 June–1 July 2021. Whereas meeting participants are particularly encouraged to submit their work, the feature issue is open to all contributions in related areas.

This special issue will cover a wide range of applications and developments throughout the industry. During the past few years, many areas of optical design have seen rapid development driven by a combination of increased demands on system performance, significant advances in both computing power and design software, and by new manufacturing technologies that offer entirely new engineering options. With such an increase of activity occurring throughout the optics industry, it becomes imperative for designers, engineers, and scientists to keep up to date with the latest state of the art.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design Theory and Geometrical Optics
  • New Technologies
    • Freeform Surfaces, Meta-surfaces, Diffractives, GRIN
    • AI in lens design
  • Imaging Systems Design Methods
    • Synthesis: Systematics, AI, Deep Learning
    • Performance Analysis and Measurement
    • Optimization and Tolerancing
  • Design for Manufacture
    • International Standards
    • Stray Light Analysis and Control
  • Imaging System Design Examples
    • Visual Systems
    • Medical and Biological
    • Space and Astronomy
    • Microscopy and Lithography
  • Illumination Systems Design Methods
    • Simulation and Modeling of Illumination Systems
    • Tolerancing in Illumination
    • Novel Light Sources and LED Optics
  • Illumination System Design Examples
    • Applications of Freeform Illumination Optics
    • Illumination Systems for Displays and Projection
    • Non-imaging Optics and Concentrated Photovoltaics
    • Illumination for Microscopy, Lithography, Endoscopy
  • History of Optical Design

All submissions need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journals. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings and the conference paper number must be included in the cover letter at submission. Please see Optica Publishing Group's guidelines on expanded conference papers for details. The standard Applied Optics page charges will apply to articles that exceed 10 published pages.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Applied Optics and submit through Prism's manuscript submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the feature issue on International Optical Design Conference.
