Abstract
We report the fabrication of ytterbium (Yb)-sensitized thulium (Tm)-doped air-clad fibers for near-IR laser applications. The effect of change in the concentration ratio of Yb and Tm was studied using three such fibers, which were pumped with a laser diode and subsequently characterized to test their lasing properties. Lasing at around the wavelength was obtained using a simple cavity design, and improved performance was seen for increased ratio.
