Abstract
A flexible coupling has been designed and tested that will cause a light beam radiating axially along one section of a closed transmission system to be redirected axially into the following section. This coupling, employing two fluid prisms, permits up to 10° of flexure in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The tracking error, i.e., difference between angle of joint flexure and the angle through which the beam is redirected, varied from less than 0.5% for a prism fluid temperature of 20°C to approximately 1.5% for a prism fluid temperature of 40°C. The coupling introduced astigmate distortion when transmitting noncollimated light and dispersive distortion when transmitting nonmonochromatic light.
