Theoretical Estimates of Cloud Reflection and Transmission in the Infrared

Abstract

The angular dependence of cloud reflectivity and transmissivity calculated on the basis of single scattering is shown as a function of insolation and scattering angles. Estimates have been made of the albedo of thick water clouds at several wavelengths from λ = 1.9 μ to 4.3 μ using single-scattering theory in regions, where water absorbs strongly, and the multiple-scattering result of Romanova [ Opt. Spectry. (USSR) 14, 135 ( 1963).], where absorption is weak. These are compared to experimental results in the 2.7-μ band.
