Abstract

The remarkable developments which have resulted in making photoelectric detection available for the whole spectrum extending from the extreme ultraviolet to the far infrared are discussed. In spite of these developments thermal detectors are still widely used and will continue to be used for some time. The special uses of various kinds of detectors are described and in particular the use of detectors to obtain very high speeds of response. A review of current practice is given.
