Abstract

Linear electrooptic effects have been observed in single crystal calcium pyroniobate (Ca2Nb2O7), a monoclinic crystal of the point group C2. For dc fields, it was determined that |r22 − 1.01 r32| = 4.1 × 10−7 esu and that |r22 − 0.76 r12| = 3.7 × 10−7. The half-wave field–distance product, [E·d]λ/2, was found to be 4500 V and 5080 V for the two respective directions of propagation. Modulation of light at 3 Gc/sec was observed using a Riesz diode followed by a 3-Gc/sec superheterodyne receiver. A simpler experimental arrangement using a pulsed microwave source and an optical diode with a metering circuit tuned to the pulse repetition frequency, was used to determine that |r22 − 1.01 r32| = 3.9 × 10−7 esu at 3 Gc/sec.
