A Study of Errors in the Measurement of Microscopic Spheres

Abstract

Uncertainties in the microscopical measurement of small spheres as influenced by index of refraction of the mount, focus, aperture, and resolution have been variously reported and denied. The present study was conducted with large spheres in order to disclose the basic phenomena, but with such optical conditions as would ordinarily be used for much smaller objects. The reality of each reported error is verified. The principal uncertainties originate in the geometrical optics of thick bodies, but these effects tend to be confused by limitations in resolving power.
