Abstract

Angular volume-scattering functions were measured as a function of the scattering angle θ for natural fogs in the atmosphere using both coherent and incoherent 0.633-μ radiation. It was found that the coherent angular volume-scattering function was significantly less than the incoherent function in each case for essentially the same fog particle size distribution, and that the effect is most pronounced at the direct back-scattering angle (θ = 180°), where it amounts to about an order of magnitude. It is pointed out that the effect is not described by the Mie theory with independent scattering, but it may arise from some coherence-dependent scattering processes; however, more detailed experimental and theoretical work must be performed before conclusions can definitely be drawn.
