Abstract

It is shown that Fourier transform methods can be used to obtain the refractive index of a specimen from observations on the interferogram obtained when broad-frequency band radiation is passed through a Michelson interferometer which contains the dispersive specimen in one arm. Values of refractive index can be determined for frequencies over the whole of the radiation band used. This technique has been applied to the fundamental vibration–rotation band of HCl centered at 2886 cm−1, and from the measured dispersion a value of (134 ± 12) cm−2 atm−1 has been determined for the integrated absorption strength of the band.
