Abstract

It is proved that three mode-field-radius definitions, Wrms, WL, and WG, for arbitrary circularly symmetric, single-mode fiber are related as WrmsWGWL, and the equal sign applies when and only when mode-field distribution is Gaussian. In addition, the application of this relation to fiber design is discussed.
