Abstract

Last December a workshop was held in Hakone, Japan, to discuss aspects of a possible new Japanese 10-yr program to follow the Fifth Generation Institute for New Generation Computer Technology program that will end in 1992. A summary of discussions is presented based on reports by David K. Kahaner of the U. S. Office of Naval Research Asian Office, and some opinions about the directions that this program might take are given, including optical computing, neural networks, and such.
