Investigation of Brittle Fracture in Steel by Means of Ultra High Speed Photography

Abstract

The propagation of brittle fracture in steel was studied with the aid of ultra high-speed photography using an AVCO streak camera and a Barr and Stroud rotating mirror-framing camera. Also, the dynamic stress pattern caused by the running crack was investigated with the aid of a photostress sheet glued onto the surface of the steel plate, using the framing camera. From the experiments it was found that brittle fracture in steel propagates in an intermittent way. The apparatus and the optical methods are described and the striking results are given.
