Abstract
Optical arithmetic processing is demonstrated by a hybrid system that utilizes parallel optical gates and electronic memories. Ripple carry and bit slice adders are compared from the standpoint of processing time and system configuration. Based on the results of the comparison, an experimental optical processor with ripple carry structure is developed capable of parallel addition and subtraction in real time.
