Abstract

The volcano at the South Pole is offering golden clues about the atmosphere. This short note, written from Antarctica and reprinted by permission from The New York Times of 26 Dec. 1989, discusses the microscopic crystals that help us to trace and track the effects of gases and what sort of role volcanoes may play in damaging the ozone layer.
