Abstract
Penning ionization reactions in Kr–U and Kr–Th hollow cathode produced plasmas have been investigated using the highly sensitive optogalvanic spectroscopy. Our experimental results show that in our experimental conditions the Penning ionization contribution to the overall ionization in those plasma amounts to ∼10%. Moreover our results also show that Penning ionization is practically nonexistent in Ne–U and Ne–Th plasmas.
