Multimode cabled optical fibers at low temperatures: an investigation

Abstract

The effects of cabling and low temperature on graded-index multimode coated optical fiber, such as that used in local area networks, have been analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. These analyses are based on inducing excess loss in the fiber using a pair of corrugated plates. The losses in coated fibers are then compared with those in uncoated fibers over the −30 to +30°C temperature range. Theoretical considerations are given for optimizing the coating thickness.
