Abstract

We make an electric-field measuring apparatus by using optical processing, tapered optical fibers, and a pair of detectors at the end of each optical fiber. Using an appropriate computer-generated hologram (CGH), we show it is possible to discriminate among a set of orthonormal modes used to represent the spatial features of the electric field with a SNR of at least 100 to 1. The tapered fiber is a mode filter that is used in the transform plane of the CGH. This fiber allows precise determination of the strength of each of the orthonormal modes being used as the spatial basis of the electric field before the optical processing.
