Abstract
The statistical polarization properties of speckle patterns are used to develop a method for measuring birefringence inherent in a speckle producing process. A formula is derived for the mean value of the second Stokes parameter as a function of the birefringence and of the angular orientation of the linear retarder. Measurements have been successfully performed to determine the induced birefringence in a fiber coil.
