Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction in optical systems: an approximate computational algorithm

Abstract

A method is outlined for approximation of scalar wave disturbances via the Fresnel-Kirchoff formula. While the method is limited to evaluating the disturbance along spherical reference surfaces, no particular inconvenience arises from this constraint in the context of many optical designs. The technique may readily be extended into the focal region. The fast Fourier transform is employed, making the computation time proportional to N logN, where N is the number of data points sampled in each wave front. Some examples are presented.
