Abstract

A cloud chamber is described in which various optical measurements of meteorological interest can be made. A refrigerated chamber of 4 cubic meters has been built, containing a mirror system permitting a range of optical path lengths up to 56 meters. The design of the optical system is explained, together with construction details of the chamber and a description of the two radiation detector systems. The usefulness of the chamber for transmissivity vs distance measurements and for scattering vs transmissivity measurements is indicated by examples of results obtained. Such measurements also can be used to calculate aerosol absorptivities.
