Abstract

Double star and polarization studies are being conducted at Lick Observatory with an image analyzer. The instrument scans the telescopic image with a slit 6 see by 0.18 see of arc at a frequency of 103 cps. Scans alternate between orientations 90° apart. Light transmitted by the slit is sensed with a refrigerated 1P21 phototube. After appropriate ac circuitry the signal is displayed on the intensity axis of an oscilloscope. The trace position is swept downwards over a period of several minutes. Photographs of the oscilloscope face consist of parallel vertical streaks whose width and brightness show the image structure.
