Abstract

It is shown that, for light scattered by large transparent spheres, an effective extinction efficiency of 0.88 will be realized if the beam divergence and detector field of view are of the order of 10°. This extinction efficiency is fairly insensitive to the wavelength of light, particle size, and refractive index.
