Generation of a spherical mirror in aluminum

Abstract

To generate a spherical mirror in aluminum, with a single point diamond as the cutting tool, the mirror was rotated by a highly precise air spindle driven by a variable speed dc motor. Cutting time was 2 h to a spherical accuracy of one wave. This cross-axis method of generating by tilted spindle will make flats and spheres only; for such surfaces it is an excellent method that requires no numerical control.
