Abstract

Backscattering of laser light that is incident at right angles to the axis of an optical fiber is utilized to evaluate the degree of eccentricity of a plastic jacket on the fiber. An analytical treatment of the problem based on ray optics is shown to be in excellent agreement with experiments, which are capable of detecting core-to-jacket offsets on the order of 1 μm.
