Abstract

R. W. Windebank of Laser Optics needed a simple way to test Ge for heat absorbing inclusions. He had made a very expensive ir system, only to find that it would not work because of poor quality germanium. The material had been ordered as optical grade but some of it was as opaque as a piece of lead. This sad situation was discussed with Mr. Windebank, who provided this test. It is easy to do and may prevent tears among those of you who make ir optics.
