Electron energy spectrum in laser-induced multiphoton ionization of atoms

Abstract

The energy distribution of the electrons resulting from the multiphoton ionization of air molecules by a focused ruby laser beam has been measured by a time-of-flight method. There appear to be two distinct contributions to the energy spectrum, one from electrons of mean energy below 1 eV and one from electrons of mean energy around 10 eV. Possible reasons for this are discussed.
