Abstract

The electric field induced second harmonic coefficient has been measured in glass. We have concluded that the nuclear contribution is significantly smaller than the electronic contribution, and that this third order effect in glass cannot be neglected when measuring the molecular hyperpolarizabilities of most organic liquids.
