Population Inversion and Energy Transfer in CO Lasers

Abstract

The operating characteristics of the CO laser excited by an electrical discharge in flowing mixtures of CO and He are described. The fundamental energy transfer processes leading to population inversion in this laser are discussed, and a qualitative discussion of the steady-state vibrational populations is given.
