A Multidisciplinary Research Program to Advance Littoral Zone Aerosol Observation and Prediction

Abstract

This talk will provide a summary of a recently launched research program seeking to advance our basic understanding and forecasting capabilities of aerosol in the coastal zones. The underpinning science questions are what factors govern the spatial distribution and properties of aerosols at the sub-kilometer scale, how do uncertainties evolve across space and time in forecast models, and how can we best leverage next-generation satellite observing systems, derived products, and data assimilation techniques to optimally inform a model’s initial state. The work seeks to determine the limits of observations and predictability of coastal aerosol with implications to a variety of potential applications, including space/time-varying impacts to electro/optical propagation.
