Abstract

The optical phase-shift-keying direct-detection receiver described here converts phase modulation to amplitude modulation (PM-AM) by using a high-resolution arrayed-waveguide grating. The amplitude of the converted signal is proportional to the derivative of the phase of the input signal. A 10-Gbit/s optical PSK-return-to-zero signal has been successfully transmitted through 100-km dispersion-shifted fiber by using the proposed PM-AM converter.
