Abstract

Over 100 years ago Gouy [1] discovered that a converging spherical wave obstructed by a circular aperture experiences an anomalous phase shift as it passes through the focal region. The phase shift is nowadays referred to as the Gouy phase shift or phase anomaly and is best known for an obstructed paraxial Gaussian beam. An intuitive interpretation of the Gouy phase has been given in terms of a geometrical quantum effect
