Abstract

The recent interest in ultrafast diffraction has been stimulated by the potential of the technique to provide a complete, global picture of structural dynamics on the femtosecond time-scale with atomic level detail. X-rays have been the probe of choice in these early experiments as both plasma and synchrotron sources have been shown to be capable of producing femtosecond bursts of X-rays of sufficient brightness to perform useful investigations.
