Direct observation of the S1 level of the carotenoid spheroidene using near-infrared femtosecond spectroscopy

Abstract

We present a method for determining the energy of the forbidden S1 state of carotenoids, on the basis of ultrafast spectroscopy. Application to the biologically relevant carotenoid spheroidene is made at room and low temperature.
