We have identified brain tissue types in intact non-human primate specimens using an all fiber CARS spectroscopy system. The system was used to delineate tissue along probe trajectories mimicking deep brain stimulation surgeries, validating its potential to provide optical guidance during the implantation. The technology is enabled by the use of a custom, ultra-portable, fast-wavelength-tuning fiber-laser, with 25 ps pulse-widths. In this paper, we show that CARS signal can be generated at the tip of a commercially available single mode silica fiber injected into a sample, with no focusing unit needed at the sample side. Our signal is detected with an adjacent multimode fiber and the spectra is temporally decoded using timing outputs from the tunable laser. The system will have clinical implications in neurosurgical guidance procedures and disease detection.
