A lower bound on the resolution limit of resonant refractive index sensors

Abstract

Using estimation theory, we derive a theoretical lower resolution limit of resonant refractive index sensors in terms of resonance linewidth, spectral sampling resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. The theoretical result is confirmed using Monte Carlo simulation.
