Abstract

Exposing nanocrystalline BaFCl:Sm3+ to ionizing radiation yields Sm2+ ions whose ff luminescence at λ>600 nm can be excited by the intense 4f6➔f5d1 transitions at ∼415 nm. The nanocrystals can be used with optical fibres for remote sensing.
