Abstract

Fluoride glasses are known since 1975. They have been discovered accidentally at Rennes University by Michel Poulain. Due to their extremely low theoretical loss 0.001 dB/km, they have been first intensively developed for long distance communication links. The target was to produce fluoride fiber with ultra-low loss as close as possible to theoretical value. This goal is a big challenge and has not been reached yet. However, all this work has made the technology very mature to meet short and medium length application needs. In fact, many applications such as spectroscopy, sensing, laser power delivery, fiber lasers and amplifiers don’t need such ultra low loss.
