Controlling Atomic Qubits with Optical and Microwave Vortices

Abstract

We predict behavior of atomic qubits in response to electromagnetic vortices, known as twisted photons: They can induce △m=±2 transitions between atomic levels and Zeeman sub-levels, while suppressing △m=±1 transitions only allowed for plane waves.
