Abstract

Because of their low threshold and high efficiency, vertical-cavity, surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are very interesting from both fundamental and application-minded perspectives. From the fundamental perspective, it has been demonstrated that VCSELs can emit light with a variance that is below the shot-noise level, a purely quantum mechanical effect.[l]
